Cardiovascular Coalition

Overview

With a very low awareness of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and proposed cuts of up to 50% to key services via regulation, the PAD sector faced payment uncertainty and operational instability in 2013. The CardioVascular Coalition’s goal was to align PAD treatment with core policy and political priorities, protect PAD services and achieve policy changes to reduce amputation relating to PAD.

3-P Strategy

We crafted and managed a comprehensive public affairs campaign featuring:

  • Policy:  Establish CVC, with membership spanning providers, researchers, and suppliers; and establish a package of policies to reduce amputations relating to PAD.

  • Positioning:  Educate decision-makers and media about PAD and Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI); position pro-PAD treatment policy as integral to combating disparities; and document the heightened risk faced by ethnic and racial minorities in the U.S.

  • Pursuit:  Convert positive reaction to our awareness-building efforts into a unifying campaign; develop and launch “Standing Together Against Limb Loss (Standing T.A.L.L.)”; focus attention on the crisis of avoidable amputations among U.S. minorities; and leverage Standing T.A.L.L.’s traction to press for pro-PAD treatment policy action.

Results

Proposed drastic cuts for 2014 were set aside and PAD awareness continues to grow among policymakers and within the provide and patient community.
